Keep reading to learn our six tips for choosing the right new career path.

6 tips for choosing a career path

1. Consider Your Past Experience

One helpful tip in choosing a new career path is to consider your past experiences and what they have in common. This can help you narrow down what you have enjoyed about past positions, allowing you to look for the same qualities in a career. For example, let’s say you have multiple experiences where you have worked with the public and enjoy helping others. Your ideal career may be working as a medical assistant, where you can directly help patients.

2. Picture Your Future

Taking a moment to imagine what you want your future to look like can be helpful in deciding on a career path. Think about your dream job, what type of work you see yourself doing, what your ideal day looks like, and what work environment suits you best. Spending time thinking about what you want your future to look like can allow you to make decisions that align with your goals.

3. Take A Career Aptitude Test

Filling out online career aptitude tests can help you discover careers you may not have been aware of before. These quizzes ask you questions about yourself, such as what your hobbies are, what your ideal work environment is, what clothes you picture yourself wearing in your future job, and more. Then, the career test will suggest career paths that align with your responses. This can be a great starting point for your research on different career options, as it may suggest paths you wouldn’t have considered or known of. You can find a simple online career test from BTC’s sister school, East Ohio College, here!

4. Do Research

Once you have decided which career path best fits your goals, conducting research and becoming familiar with the career is important. This includes the necessary training or education, experience, certifications*, future career outlook, and more. Preparing for the steps you must take to begin your career is essential to success. For example, let’s say you want to become a phlebotomy technician. This career path requires prior training and experience, so researching schools where you can receive this training is crucial.

5. Think About Your Motivations

Your motivations are what drive you to succeed, so it is vital to consider what your motivations are before beginning your new professional journey. Your motivations could be anything from wanting a better life for your family to a feeling of fulfillment by helping others. Whatever your motivations are, they are a great reminder of the bigger picture when your journey becomes difficult.

6. Seek Professional Resources

After deciding on your new career path, building professional relationships with industry experts in your area can be vital to your success. Utilizing helpful tools such as LinkedIn can help you connect with others in the field you are looking to enter. Additionally, your instructors, mentors, and peers throughout your educational journey can also be valuable resources when it comes to entering the healthcare field.
