Student Of The Month!
Boardman Training Center is excited to announce this month’s featured student, LaShonda Doneway!
LaShonda is a current student in BTC’s Cardio Phlebotomy program, where she is learning valuable skills and knowledge through hands-on training that will expand her future career opportunities! Before attending Boardman Training Center, LaShonda was working as a retail manager for a chain pharmacy. She knew she wanted to work in the medical field, but it wasn’t until she had her blood drawn one day that she decided on cardio phlebotomy. “I knew I could do it,” she said.
The skills, techniques, and knowledge LaShonda will learn as a Boardman Training Center student will open doors of opportunities for her, including her goal of becoming a traveling phlebotomist. In five years, LaShonda hopes to continue working as a traveling phlebotomist while continuing her medical education.

The hands-on training that Boardman Training Center offers allows students to learn the fundamentals of their chosen field, practice their skills under the instruction of experienced instructors, and then prepare to sit for industry-specific National Healthcareer Association (NHA) certification* exams. In LaShonda’s case, the cardio phlebotomy training program will prepare her to sit for the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) and Certified EKG Technician (CET) certifications.
The Skills LaShonda Will Learn At BTC
As a cardio phlebotomy student, LaShonda will learn aspects of both the cardio and phlebotomy fields. Her hands-on training will include performing EKGs, drawing blood, infection control protocol, proper equipment usage and storage, and more! As she completes her cardio phlebotomy technician training, LaShonda will have a wealth of knowledge and skills to get started in her new career.
When asked who her favorite instructor at BTC is, LaShonda says Mrs. Durch. “She is the best teacher I have ever had,” she said.”She took time after class to help me and explained in ways I understood. I knew she cared.”
The skills, knowledge, experience, and connections that LaShonda will leave Boardman Training Center with will prepare her for a successful career as a cardio phlebotomy technician. She will be qualified for positions in medical facilities, including clinics, laboratories, doctor’s offices, hospitals and emergency rooms, long-term care facilities, and more!

When asked if she would refer Boardman Training Center to a friend, her answer was definitely! “BTC wants you to succeed; the staff is so understanding,” she said. “They go above and beyond to help you get where you want to be.”
LaShonda’s advice for anyone wanting to start a new healthcare career is to take the leap of faith! “Get out of your own head and register,” she said. “I thought I couldn’t do it, and I am proud to say I did, and you can too.”
