How to Stick to Your Resolutions and Goals All Year Long

Updated Content 1/21/2026

It’s a brand-new year, and we’ve all made New Year’s resolutions; however, making them is always the easiest part. Staying committed to the goals you set for the year is much more difficult.

Maybe you set a resolution to eat healthier and work out more. Or you set a goal to start a new career by going back to school and enrolling in a career training program. Whatever resolutions you’ve set, there are several things you can do to help stay focused and on track to achieving your goals throughout the year. Boardman Training Center (BTC) has put together some tips to help you stay committed!

Create a Plan Just for You

What is a New Year’s resolution? A New Year’s resolution is a personal goal or commitment someone makes at the start of a new year to improve some part of their life. It often reflects a desire for positive change, whether that means building healthier habits, learning new skills, advancing a career, or focusing more on personal growth and well-being.

For many people, a New Year’s resolution represents a fresh start, a chance to reflect on the past year, set intentions for the future, and take meaningful steps toward becoming the best version of themselves.

Now, let’s build a clear plan of action to help you reach your goals for the year ahead! What works for one person may not work for someone else, which is why there is no one-size-fits-all approach to reaching your goals. Each of us needs a plan that fits our own lifestyle, priorities, and challenges. A great way to start is by setting specific, personal goals.

If your New Year’s resolution is to work out more, think about how many days a week you will exercise, what types of workouts you will do, and when and where those workouts will happen. By answering these questions, you turn a general goal into a clear, realistic plan tailored to your needs and set you up for long-term success.

As you begin building a new habit, each time you take action, it becomes a little easier the next time. Exercise, for example, may feel difficult at first, especially if it’s been a while since you last worked out. Feeling sore after those early workouts is completely normal. But as you stay consistent, your body will start to adapt. You’ll gain strength, build endurance, and notice that what once felt hard becomes more manageable. Over time, you’ll improve, grow more confident, and find that the habit starts to feel natural.

Don’t Overcommit

When we are trying to improve various aspects of ourselves, it may be tempting to pursue all our goals at once. But if you create too many resolutions at once, it can be more difficult. Things may become overwhelming when trying to make so many changes at once. This may demotivate you or cause you to give up easily. If you pick three goals to start with and make them your main priorities, you will be able to reach your goals more successfully.

If one of your goals is to exercise more, a fitness app can help you plan workouts, track your progress, and stay motivated. If your goal is to make healthier food choices, there are nutrition apps that let you log meals and learn which foods are most beneficial for your body. You might also have a goal to save more money or manage your budget better. In that case, a budgeting app that tracks your spending can give you clearer insight into where your money is going and help you take better control of your finances.

Choose Progress Over Perfection

Change is a journey, and it rarely happens overnight. Meaningful transformation comes from the small steps you take each day. If one of your goals is to return to school and start a new career, every class you attend and every exam you pass moves you closer to that goal. While completing career training takes time and dedication, each milestone builds your knowledge and confidence. By the time you finish, you won’t just have completed a program, you’ll be prepared and ready to step into your new career.

If we keep waiting for the perfect moment to take action, we may never move forward at all. The truth is, there is no perfect time; things will never line up exactly the way we imagine. If we want to make progress toward our goals, we have to be willing to step outside our comfort zone and take that first step, even when the timing doesn’t feel ideal.

Stay Focused

Staying focused on your goals and resolutions can be challenging. The beginning is often filled with excitement, but as time goes on, that energy can fade, and motivation can dip. The good news is that there are plenty of ways to keep yourself on track throughout the year. If rewards help keep you motivated, consider treating yourself to something small each time you reach an important milestone.

Practicing daily affirmations can also help reinforce the mindset needed to create the life you want. Another helpful strategy is to find motivating words or quotes and place them somewhere you’ll see them every morning: on sticky notes, your mirror, or even as reminders or notifications.

Always remind yourself of the reasons you made your resolutions in the first place. Reflect on what inspired you to set these specific goals and what drives you to make these changes. There will be days when you feel discouraged or tempted to give up, but reconnecting with your original “why” can shift your mindset, renew your motivation, and help you keep moving forward.

Get Support of Family and Friends

Support from those around you can make or break your progress toward your goals. If you are surrounded by a strong network of friends and family who offer support, it will be much easier for you to keep your resolutions. Additionally, having someone who can mentor you, who has already successfully gone through the process and made it to where you want to be, can help you on your path to achieving your goals. They can share best practices with you and insights from their own experiences. Intentionally creating this type of network will surround you with positive influence.

Build your team of cheerleaders who help motivate you along the way, and remember that it’s okay to ask others for help. Finding an accountability partner, like a friend with the same resolution as you, can also have a significant impact. Partner with them to keep each other motivated and on the right path. Regularly spend time sharing with each other to check up on progress or any issues you both may encounter. Having someone you can talk to can help you stay committed.
