Meet Destiny Barnes!
As a recent graduate of the Phlebotomy program, Destiny Barnes is Boardman Training Center’s (BTC) graduate of the month for June.
Through hard work, perseverance, and the support she found at BTC, she has gained the skills and confidence needed to move forward in the healthcare field. Read on to explore Destiny Barnes’s journey.
Choosing BTC
Before enrolling, she explained, “I was a stay-at-home mom who was holding 2 jobs at the time to maintain a life for my son. I was always working and taking care of my baby.” Despite her busy and demanding schedule, Destiny Barnes remained focused on building a better future. When asked why she chose Boardman Training Center, she said, “BTC has had my attention since I saw them on a Facebook ad.” Her first interaction with her admission team member, Amber Petroff, proved her assumptions correct: “Not only were they caring, but Amber was the best person to get you into the course. She explains everything so well.”
Destiny’s BTC Experience
Destiny Barnes’s positive first impression continued throughout her experience, as she added, “My experience was amazing. It honestly was something I never imagined.” Choosing the right program was also an important step, and Destiny explained, “This program (Phlebotomy) just seemed like the best way to start my career to become a neonatal nurse and become something I’ve dreamed of for years.”
Reflecting on her favorite part of her experience with BTC, Destiny shared, “The students and my instructor. They were amazing.” Everyone’s dedication, patience, and willingness to go the extra mile were inspiring: “Everything was very neat and clean and very well explained.” Whether she was facing challenges or learning new skills, their support helped her push past self-doubt and stay motivated every step of the way.
Destiny’s most rewarding part of her journey was, “Just honestly everything. BTC has taught me amazing things in just a short amount of time. My instructor helped me so much through things I didn’t see myself overcoming.”
What’s Next
After graduation, Destiny’s ideal role is to be a “Phlebotomist in either outpatient or inpatient settings to get hands-on experience with babies and children.” Hands-on experience working with children, an area that she is especially passionate about, helps her get closer to her dream career. Destiny shared, “Becoming a neonatal doctor is my dream.”
When asked how Boardman Training Center has helped prepare her for her future, Destiny explained that BTC has helped her gain valuable insight into her long-term career goals, “BTC helped by guiding me on the right path for that. Even though we stayed focused on Phlebotomy, my instructor also gave me some heads up on what’s coming for neonatal school, and it’s helped me so much.” Her instructor’s willingness to share knowledge about the next steps in neonatal education gave her a clearer understanding of what to expect and how to prepare. Destiny feels confident and motivated as she continues working towards her dream.
In five years, Destiny Barnes has a clear vision for where she wants to be. She hopes she will, “Have my very own home, have my BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing), be working in neonatal, taking very good care of my family without worry.” This goal reflects not only her professional ambitions but also her deep personal commitment to creating stability and security for her family.

When asked if she would refer a friend, Destiny said, “Yes, because they honestly gave me the best experience and I know they’ll do the same for everyone else.” Destiny’s confidence in recommending BTC shows how much she valued the guidance, hands-on training, and personal support she received. From supportive instructors to a welcoming learning environment, her experience was not only educational but also encouraging and empowering.
