Meet Charity Unruh, our student highlight for this week!
After graduating from high school, many people are unsure of what to do next. With so many options and career paths available to choose from, it can be hard to decide which one fits you best. Charity, our student highlight this week, experienced this as well.
“I was trying to decide what I wanted to do but couldn’t. I knew I had always wanted to do something in the medical field,” said Charity. When she was younger, her grandpa had cancer and had to have a lot of surgeries. In helping take care of her grandpa, she discovered that her niche in life was helping people. Her grandpa’s hospice nurse even told Charity that she is a natural nurse.
Charity’s mom is a pharmacist and she learned a lot about the medical field from her.
Before attending Boardman Training Center, Charity took a year off from school after high school to figure out what she wanted to do. She was originally going to go to college for nursing, but the cost of tuition was very high and unaffordable.
“I chose BTC because it was affordable. I liked that it is a small facility with small classes. Also, I could tell right away that the staff cares about their students,” said Charity of her decision to attend Boardman Training Center.
Charity is currently enrolled in the Medical Office Specialist program at BTC and is on the fast-track to starting her career in the medical field.
“I chose my program because I’ve always been fascinated with the medical field. My grandpa is the one who inspired me by helping take care of him when he had cancer,” said Charity. Also, her grandpa always told her that she would be a nurse.
When asked what her favorite part is of attending BTC, Charity said, “it’s that everyone here is so close knit, like a family. I also love that the staff goes to every length to make sure their students succeed.”
EKG is Charity’s favorite class in the Medical Office Specialist training program at BTC because she has always been fascinated by the heart.
Charity says that she would love to specialize in cardiology after graduating from BTC, because the cardiovascular system is her favorite and fascinates her the most. This goes back to Charity’s high school anatomy class when she dissected a pig’s heart. She was immediately intrigued and knew she wanted to work with the heart.
“In five years, I would like to have made a difference in as many peoples’ lives as I possibly can,” said Charity. She would even like to assist in heart surgeries one day.
When asked if she would refer Boardman Training Center to a friend, Charity said, “I would most definitely refer BTC to a friend. The staff is incredible, and it feels like I’ve created a second family by attending BTC.”
Charity truly loves training for a new medical career at BTC and says that it has been phenomenal for her. She couldn’t imagine her life if she had not come here for school.
Even though high school was not her thing, Charity says coming to BTC was different because they take care of you here. She doesn’t know what she will do when she leaves BTC because it has become a second home to her.
“Give it a shot. Look into it. Honestly, if you enroll here, you will not regret it. It will be like you have a second family,” said Charity, giving her advice for anyone considering enrolling at BTC to train for a new healthcare career.
