What’s the difference between a job and a career?
Along with the many differences between a job and a career, one of the major ones is that a job is a short-term way to earn money, while a career focuses on long-term opportunities. Additionally, a job typically requires little to no training or experience, while a career position usually requires skills and knowledge to get started. For example, a healthcare career usually requires candidates to possess hands-on skill training, whereas a retail employee would receive on-the-job training.
Another benefit of a career vs. job is that a career can be built upon previous experiences and positions, allowing job advancement and satisfaction. A career can also provide financial stability and routine.
How can you start your career?
Determining which path is best for you is a good starting point when looking at career options. One way to do this is to list your interests and strengths to see which ones you could use in your career. Then, by using your skills and interests to decide on a career path, you are more likely to feel satisfied and be successful in your new career.
Another way to determine a path is to take online career aptitude tests. Many free online versions will evaluate your answers to questions such as how long you see yourself in school, how you picture yourself dressing, traits that are important to you, and more. The test will then suggest possible career options that align with your personal and professional goals.
Once you’ve decided on a career path, the next step is finding a training program to teach you the necessary skills to enter the field. Many different institutions offer programs of different lengths with different outcomes, so doing research is essential. Boardman Training Center equips students with the hands-on skills they need to enter the workforce and the knowledge necessary to sit for their industry-specific National Healthcareer Association (NHA) certification* exam(s).

Boardman Training Center’s current program offerings include:
Phlebotomy Technician
This 12-week program is great for students interested in learning essential healthcare skills, including specimen collection, injections, venipuncture, infection control, and more. In addition, students who complete the Phlebotomy Technician program will be prepared to sit for the NHA Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT)* exam.
EKG Technician
This 12-week program teaches students the basics of EKG/ECG testing, including using heart monitors, identifying EKG waveforms, distinguishing basic dysrhythmias, and more. Students who complete the EKG Technician program will be prepared to sit for the NHA Certified EKG Technician (CET)* exam.
Cardio-Phlebotomy
This 24-week program is an excellent option for students interested in aspects of phlebotomy and EKG monitoring. Topics covered in the Cardio Phlebotomy program include performing EKGs, injections, blood draws, education about various types of medical equipment, and more. Students who complete this program are prepared to sit for two NHA certification exams, the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT)* exam and the Certified EKG Technician (CET)* exam.
Medical Assisting
This 12-week program is ideal for students who want to gain hands-on patient experience and basic administrative skills, including checking vital signs, specimen collection, injections, basic wound care, patient intake, and more. Students who complete the Medical Assisting program are prepared to sit for the NHA Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA)* and Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA)* exams.
Medical Billing and Coding
This 12-week program allows students to learn billing and coding basics, including medical claims fraud, medical coding to ICD-10 standards, billing compliance, and more. Students who complete the Medical Billing and Coding program will be prepared to sit for the NHA Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS)* exam.
